Post-COVID and with ever-increasing environmental issues, the world is increasingly becoming conscious of their lifestyle choices. They are adopting a nutritional lifestyle while trying to contribute to making their choices eco-friendly. In today’s episode, we discussed millets, their nutritional and environmental benefits. 2023 is the International Year of Millets. The governments across the world are working to raise awareness and provide encouragement to grow and consume this power packed food.

[02:36] – What are the nutritional benefits of millets?

  • COVID showed how people lacked immunity and nutrition.
  • Someone who has consumed millets since childhood, will have more nutrition and hence immunity. It can overpower the protection that comes from the vaccines.
  • Millets are also climate-friendly crops. Millets are easily found in semi-arid and arid regions like Rajasthan.
  • The UN has accepted it today because of its nutritional and environmental values.

[07:20] – What are the different kinds of varieties of millets?

  • We are all aware of three major millets- jowar, bajra and ragi. 
  • We underestimate millets because we are not aware of the minor millets, like foxtail, proso, barnyard millet etc.
  • These positive millets have the power to reverse the problem of diabetes.
  • It has the power of reversing chronic diseases because of its low glycemic index, and hence, does not spike the blood sugar level.
  • South Indians consume millet as the staple food even today. More awareness about it is needed in North and West India.

[16:07] – Please share the environmental benefits of millet farming.

  • 1 kg of rice needs more than 4500 liters of water. Nutritionally, it has a high glycemic index. When we consume rice or wheat, we experience a sugar spike in blood.
  • On the other hand, millets can grow even in drought-like conditions. And the nutritional benefits cannot be ignored.
  • Millets are heat resilient and carbon resilient crops.
  • The entire world is facing nutritionals security. Countries like the USA used millet as fodder but today have accepted to grow it for nutritional security of their population.
