On today’s episode of The Brand Called You, we have with us a very accomplished professional, Mr. Achin Bhattacharyya. Mr. Bhattacharyya is the Founder and CEO of Notebook. He has worked with renowned brands like KPMG, Deloitte, GE and PWC.
After a very successful career in the corporate world, Mr. Bhattacharyya decided to changed gears and do something meaningful. He decided to switch to the social sector and make an impractful change. Mr. Bhattacharyya initiated his venture named Notebook which is mobile’s first, digital learning product. He asking with his team creates engaging videos for school children. This platform is accessible to students of all standards and for the CBSE, ICSE and several state boards across the country. Notebook is an academic part of about 17.5 lakh students’ routine.
As his professional career revolves around education, Mr. Garg put forth some great questions with respect to the same. They discussed the standardisation of education and the literacy rates of our country. Mr. Bhattacharyya believes that while Notebook cannot replace traditional schooling, it is a strong support for teachers that are teaching online in the pandemic situation. Notebook, a mobile-first digital learning product that combines video and text content to deliver best-in-class education tailored to Board curricula. It allows a productive engagement of mind through visuals and audio which promises to create maximum impact through short-form content. The syllabi across CBSE, ICSE, and multiple state boards are broken down into topics and sub-topics. Every sub-topic is then converted into engaging video lessons of the highest quality. The videos include instructor-led components as well as graphic visualization elements to reinforce storytelling. Hand-drawn illustrations, soothing music, and well thought out creative design augment storytelling and enhance understanding and retention of topics. Vernacular languages are used alongside English to ensure inclusivity, relevance and usability.
Notebook launched its beta site on 26th January 2019, and the first phase went live on 1st April. Amid the lockdown situation and the closure of schools, Notebook is offering free access to schools and Students. It has seen a good rise in daily users to 5000 and the videos watched in Notebook have risen to 20000 per day. Notebook serves Pan India but the higher user response is from the state of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. Students can learn their school syllabus through the Notebook app with the help of exciting videos in regional languages. Notebook is targeted at Indian parents and students from class one to twelve. Notebook now has more than 1.7mn users. Notebook, thus, is leading the charge with a paradigm shift in the Indian education system. With more than 95% of the student population ignored by the ed-tech industry/unicorns due to various reasons which not only makes education inaccessible but also hinders the growth of human capital in India. Notebook’s objective is to address this ever-widening gap of inaccessibility, it is making its way to the audience who have still not benefited from the ed-tech boom nor are they in the imagination of the industry.
Notebook has produced more than 10,000 videos on topics and subtopics across syllabus of CBSE, ICSE, UP and WB State Board and producing other boards. That is it, the e-learning happens from well-made storytelling, storytellers, animations, graphics, and most importantly in bi-lingual. Notebook doesn’t intend to replace teachers, it actually assists teachers in class room learning with every video not longer than 6-10minutes. Notebook was launched in 2019 and in a year it has garnered more than 1.71mn users. It has also tied up with BSNLTV, Pratham Foundation, Save The Children and so on to make sure the content is accessed by multiple stakeholders.
