Profile
Munmun Ghosh is a Mumbai-based ‘artist’ — driven to create beauty, benefit and value, in different media. From journalism and fiction-writing to music, yoga and motivational talks. Passionate about culture and empowering people to realise their fullest potential in life.
With a 1st class 1st Masters’ degree in English Literature from Mumbai University, she worked as a full-time journalist for a range of publications – from Stardust and MOVIE to The Daily, The Economic Times, Mid-Day, Dignity Dialogue, and indya.com for over a decade and was a senior editor with CRISIL Ltd for a number of years, till May 2019.
Her creative writing encompasses mainly three books. Her first work of fiction Hushed Voices (2007) explored the lives of Mumbai’s marginalized classes through a series of connected monologues. In her second fictional venture, a full-fledged novel named Unhooked (2012), Ghosh spotlighted the metro phenomenon of intellectual mating between the sexes and its repercussions. Munmun Ghosh’s third book Thicker than Blood (2016) explores the dynamics of a marriage as it evolves over years and the infertility treatment versus adoption debate, through a gripping story.
If she is a compulsive dealer in words, she is also a compulsive musician and has been singing and playing sitar on stage since her childhood. Initiated into sitar as a school girl by Pt. Kartick Kumar, and further tutored by Ustad Azim Khan and Shri Pulak Lahiri, Ghosh has featured in Pt. Kartick Kumar’s sitar concerts in the past and performed solo on television. Having done her Sangeet Visharad in vocal classical music, she sings Tagore’s songs as well as old Hindi film melodies with panache.
Besides teaching sitar and giving sitar recitals, Munmun Ghosh currently writes articles on wellness, music and yoga as a freelance journalist. She conducts yoga workshops for different groups and promotes music therapy as a motivational speaker. She strongly believes in the power of music to heal, and to elevate the human spirit.
Rabindranath Tagore’s lyrical imperative ‘ Shada thako anonde’ (dwell in joy always) is her guiding credo in life.
