Even if you are a die-hard self-starter, who doesn’t need a mentor? Not having a mentor in your life can be a real bummer, especially when you are just starting out. [00:37] About Linda Mcloughlin, Founder, LeadershipWorks International, Member, ICF Global Board
Linda is the Founder and Director of LeadershipWorks International. She was awarded the prestigious “Coach of the Year 2017” and “Mentor Coach of the Year” honors by ICF Ireland.
[01:00] About LeadershipWorks
LeadershipWorks specializes in customized organization and leadership development programs leveraging a coaching mindset and toolkit. LeadershipWorks offers globally International Coaching Federation (ICF) approved programs in Arabic and English both virtually and in person. All LeadershipWorks associates are trained and experienced ICF coaches.
[02:30] What made you become a coach?
I became an accidental coach because I am originally Irish, and I was working with the Institute of Public Administration, which is a very well recognized body in Ireland. I was head of their leadership development. I was running flagship programs for very senior public servants, and it was a blend mainly of training, but we began to introduce a thing called coaching.
[05:03] How has coaching evolved as a profession?
Coaching is completely different from mentoring. It is a profession, it is paid. It is a formal relationship with the client. The idea is that you can create transformation with clients either at an individual level or at a team and organizational level through using the skills of coaching.
[07:51] What are the special skills that you bring to a relationship?
- I have an ability to connect with people and establish psychological safety with them.
- I am very non-judgmental.
- I am a very deep listener.
- I am very intuitive.
[09:51] How does one evaluate that they have a good coach?
- My advice to anyone getting into a coaching relationship is to check out the qualifications and the credentials of the person who is calling themselves a coach.
- Make sure your coach is trained by approved training providers and governed by a code of ethics.
- Ask yourself, am I comfortable with this coach, can we connect, can I see myself working with them.
[15:26] Difference in coaching top management versus emerging leaders
The difference is experience. Experience can have a good side and a bad side. You will use more assessment tools with the emerging leaders.
