Overview
The flourishing, and even the survival, of any culture, depends on the preservation and sharing of its art forms, especially its literature. Dr. Nora Gold, committed to preserving and encouraging contemporary Jewish literature, edits an online literary journal that displays the work of both noted and budding Jewish writers.
Her journal, Jewish Fiction .net (www.jewishfiction.net) is free and open to everyone across the globe. Today we discuss what goes into her effort to preserve Jewish literature, as well as her interfaith activism and her own prize-winning books.
[00:35] – About Dr. Nora Gold
- Dr. Gold is a writer, publisher, and editor of a literary journal, jewishfiction.net.
- She is the author of three best-selling books: “Marrow and Other Stories, Fields of Exile, and The Dead Man”.
- She is the winner of two Canadian Jewish books and literary awards.
- Dr. Gold is also a former professor of social work and a community activist involved in feminist issues and interfaith dialogue between Jews and Muslims.
[03:06] – Tell me about jewishfiction.net, and why did you start it?
- It is an online literary journal and the only journal that is devoted exclusively to publishing Jewish fiction.
- It is for everyone who wants to read and learn about different cultures.
- We publish works that are either written in English or translated into English from 18 languages.
- I knew some writers who were writing great fiction, but couldn’t find publishers for their work.
- When the digital world first started, it caused a seismic shock to the publishing world. They were unwilling to take risks on new writers, and I got worried about great literature getting lost.
- As I discovered Jewish fiction from around the world, I realized that there needs to be a journal of Jewish fiction that is truly international.
- I also realized that the Jewish community was becoming increasingly polarized between left and right, religious and secular, and all sorts of divisions. I wanted a place where all kinds of Jews and their stories could meet each other, and could have exchanges in civil and safe space.
- It was created as an act of cultural and interfaith exchange. I wanted non-Jews to be able to read Jewish literature.
[11:01] – What are the issues you address and challenges you face as a social activist?
- I have done feminist work in the fields of workplace, health, and working with caregivers.
- I cared a lot about building bridges across cultures and faith groups.
- At one point, I co-founded an educational organization that was promoting tolerance and mutual understanding between Jews and Arabs. I got into discussing religion, religious background, and faith with those people.
- In one such dialogue, we were a group of Canadian women, half Muslims, and half Jews. We had very divergent perspectives on Israel. But I wasn’t shocked. These views were expected and had to be accepted.
- Despite these differences, there was a great bond between all of us in the group. We had a great deal in common as women and as feminists. As the group developed, we discussed feminist issues, and religion, and discussed personal matters like marriage and motherhood.
