Overview

Is a lack of clarity responsible for those problems? Are you quite clear about your destination? If you hesitate to ask such questions, you need to understand the power of clarity. And who is better than the Queen of Clarity herself?

Ann Latham is the founder of Boston area consulting firm Uncommon Clarity®, Inc. Her clients represent over 40 industries and range from for-profit organizations, such as Boeing, Medtronic, and Hitachi, to non-profit organizations as diverse as Public Television, United Way, and colleges and universities.

She is on a mission to make organizations, if not the world, a better place through greater cognitive clarity.

00:32 – About Ann Latham and her journey

  • Ann is the President of Uncommon Clarity Inc.
  • She authored a book titled The Power of Clarity.
  • Ann Latham is founding the newest branch of management science: Clarity. Cognitive clarity, to be more precise.
  • Latham’s work also includes many ways in which we aren’t wired for clarity and how we can create the kind of clarity that will dramatically improve our productivity, performance, confidence, commitment, and ability to truly empower others to ensure every employee can contribute their best.

04:05- What kind of work are you doing at Uncommon Clarity?

  • I started with self-clarity.
  • Everyone knows clarity is good, and they assume they are more transparent than everybody else. But no one knows where they are in life.
  • I did a lot of strategic planning, functional movements and team effectiveness.
  • My game-changing work paves the way for new ways of thinking, communicating, and interacting.
  • Uncommon Clarity deals with treadmill verbs, destination verbs, alternative-centric decision-making, objective-centric decision-making, kitchen sink conversations, clarity-in-the-moment, and cognitive clarity.

[12:35]- What are the six destination verbs?

  1. Decide very clear
  2. Plan: You need action items, resources, schedules, and many more to create a plan.
  3. Resolve a problem
  4. List: When you make a list, you know when you are done because you cannot think of anything more to add to that list. A list is a concrete idea object and an input for others. You require a list of decision criteria, options, and risks to make a decision.
  5. Confirm: Confirm if you want confirmation in yes or no.
  6. Authorize: can we begin; do I have permission to start?

23:37- Three lessons

  • Read the book. You cannot fix a problem till you see it.
  • Be more specific in what you expect when dealing with clarity.
  • Pay more attention to the process.
