Overview
Dr. Elia Gourgouris is the President of The Happiness Center and an author of several books on positive psychology, including “7 Paths to Lasting Happiness” and “7 Keys to Navigating a Crisis.” He became interested in the field of happiness when he was born with a big smile on his face and his father referred to him as the “happy one.” He later went on to get his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and found that his interest in happiness was a combination of both nature and nurture. He believes that people are typically “branded” in their early lives by their families and that his own brand is the “happiness brand.”

01:30- What encouraged you to pursue happiness as a career?
- Believe it or not, my happiness brand began the very day I was born.
- I was born in Greece. In those days, no one was invited to the birthing room.
- My father asked the nurse which one is my son, out of five babies in the room.
- I had a big smile on my face. And the nurse turns to my dad and says, your son, he’s the happy one. And that was my brand.
06:51- How do you define happiness?
- As the great Greek philosopher, Aristotle 2500 years ago said, happiness is the whole purpose and meaning of life, the whole aim, and the end of human existence.
- To me, happiness is the most important thing in our lives.
08:13- What are the factors that could influence our happiness negatively?
- Lack of self-forgiveness. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Self-forgiveness equals freedom. Self-forgiveness leads to happiness.
- It is the most self-compassionate thing we can do.
- If we surround ourselves with toxic relationships and toxic people, it is very hard to maintain our inner peace and happiness.
