Overview

Since ancient times, people have used their innate intelligence to carefully experiment with solutions for resource optimization, waste management, and sustainable material utilization, emphasizing the interdependence of nature and daily life.  Various local communities in India have developed and perfected the art of creating various products for daily use or even decor through sustainable and eco-friendly materials.

In today’s episode of The Brand Called You, Payal Nath talks about the NGO Kadam and Kadam Haat, also called Basketry Barn creating and supporting rural enterprises. She also talks about the challenges of setting up an enterprise in a rural setting and various aspects related to it.

00:37 – About  Payal Nath.

  • Payal is the co-founder of Kadam and Kadam Haat, also called A Basketry Barn creating and supporting rural enterprises while building Samarth Bharat.
  • Payal has been recognized and felicitated several times.

02:20- Tell me a little bit about Kadam and Kadam Haat.

  • Kadam is an NGO, which is not for profit. And here, we create rural enterprises.
  • Now in creating a rural enterprise, you’re required to create an entire ecosystem in the area where there is poverty.
  • This also means not just training, and upskilling the communities but also creating an entire ecosystem of logistic partners and infrastructure. So if it was a for-profit body, it could not have that kind of investment and the return on investment.
  • To be able to create a sustainable income for whatever we have done, we need a marketing partner.
  • In Canada, we started to make tie-ups with various marketplaces, companies, big companies, and consumer goods companies.
  • There was a big disconnect between artists and communities and the consumer marketing bodies.
  • We started Kadam Haat as the interface, the idea was for the communities to have a sponge, and for those who understand professional setups to understand as well, and without really making profits as the core, but to be what it’s meant to be, sustainably.

16:00-  How are you managing the supply chain across such a major country?

  • It’s not easy, in a country like ours, it’s absolutely not.
  • That is why we sell on Kadam Haat.
  • All the products that we are selling go through Kadam, which means they go through the ecosystem that has been already set up for the supply chain and the training and the upskilling for the ecosystem have been done.
  • We have a method to the madness right from the starting point of choosing the people with whom we are going to work, and what is the product.
  • It’s not just picking up sourcing and selling, it is setting up the supply chain first and then selling.
  • That’s the only reason why we’ve been able to manage this in this sector, especially, but it’s still not easy.
