Overview

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices in the workplace aid in business benefits like sales revenue, and better customer relations. DEI programs and practices add to an organisation’s ethical culture and build happy and engaged employees. But who is accountable for promoting such practices? Today, we discuss the topic in detail with Asfa Malik, who is working to inspire leaders to drive inclusion hiring.

[00:32] – About Asfa Malik

  • Asfa is the Founder and CEO of GrowthMinded Consulting.
  • She is the Leadership Consultant of CEOs and Business Leaders to drive inclusion from hiring to inspiring.
  • Asfa is an award-winning talent development leader with a strong background in sales, learning, and strategy.
  • She is also the author of several articles.

[02:58] – What do you mean by, “Change means taking a thoughtful and long-term approach?”

  • When you think of any type of change, there is a strategic component to it. There is a reason for every change.
  • What people stop remembering or do not think through is the emotional impact of the change.
  • Before implementing any change, you need to be able to think of short-term and long-term changes.
  • In the summer of 2002, companies in the US started realising the need to hire more diversity and a chief diversity officer.
  • What they didn’t see through was retention, which is a long-term approach. You’re bringing diverse candidates, but how long will they stay?
  • The long-term approach involves thinking about retention, systems, and ways of advancing people in their careers, regardless of colour or biases.

[12:50] – What are your thoughts on holding CHO accountable for inclusivity and diversity?

  • I have spent 13 years in HR and would mention that people in HR cannot solve all of these problems.
  • If you dig deeper, you will realise it is not about them not finding qualified people. But leaders say that they are not qualified.
  • There is a test that we are following by removing the name from the resume and sharing only the resumes. You’ll be surprised with all the women they find and with all the people from diverse backgrounds.
  • The head of HR is responsible for putting programs and systems in place, but when it comes down to hiring decisions, it is about who is making that decision. It is not the HR, but the Business Leaders.

[14:36] – How does culture impact the DEI?

  • Culture sets your retention numbers. It specifies how people talk about your company.
  • Culture is the core of your leadership, employee engagement, and your actual brand.
  • The company’s culture is what drives the brand.
