[02:01] – Tell me about Arha Media and Broadcasting.

  • We are an entertainment platform and OTT entertainment platform, started three years back with Telugu content.
  • We extended into Tamil content almost a year ago.
  • The plan is to extend into other languages as well and grow organically.

[03:48] – How is digital media changing the film and television business?

  • In the case of the film business, digital is probably playing a symbiotic role.
  • Given the challenges cinema has been facing for some time with the number of people going to cinemas becoming fewer, the digital platforms are actually funding cinema makers and are giving them an opportunity to make better cinema.
  • In the case of television, there is a pressure that’s being put on TV from the digital medium, because if you step back and look at it fairly simplistically, any consumer has X amount of time for entertainment. Now entertainment could come from cinema or television or OTT, short-form content, news, and so on and so forth.

[05:34] – What are the challenges of so much competition that we see in the OTT platforms?

  • If you look at it from a consumer perspective, there is a greater choice, not just in terms of platforms, but also in terms of variety of content.
  • From a broadcaster’s perspective, or from the entertainment platforms’ perspective, it makes it that much more difficult.
  • But if I were to spend this positively, I think it challenges us to give compelling content and good content and tell great stories.
  • From a business perspective, there is only a certain amount of money in the consumer’s pocket, that she or he wishes to spend on entertainment. So, all of us are competing for that share of money in the pocket.
