[00:32] – About Kumar Vikram

  • Kumar is a publishing editor and author.
  • He is the author of “Men’s Lib and Other Literary, Cultural, and Personal Essays.”
  • He is also the co-author of a book on Selected Poems of TS Eliot.
  • He is a senior editor with the National Book Trust of India.

[08:43] – Tell me a little bit about the book, “Men’s Lib”. What was your hypothesis?

  • In around 2002 – 2003, I came across an author called Edward W. Said. He is one of the most important postcolonial theorists, and he passed away in 2005.
  • He gave me a different kind of perspective on looking at things from an entirely different perspective.
  • I have always been interested in the issues of gender equality. I’ve always been interested in feminist issues.
  • But the research was always done. There are theorists and psychologists working on it in places like Australia, that promote the idea that patriarchy not only impacts women, it also impacts men.
  • As women are supposed to follow certain gender codes and gender roles, so, men are also supposed to follow certain gender codes and gender roles.
  • The ingrained idea is that, if you are born a male, that is an achievement in itself.
  • These are illusions that are created around you, and then what happens is it impacts you, as an individual. It doesn’t allow you to grow in a holistic manner, in an inclusive manner, your personality suffers because you’re continuously carrying this false superiority complex.
  • Then it impacts your relationships and your attitude to life and to society.
  • This is one of the lead articles. There are many other essays, which actually deal with the historical idea, cultural ideas, and ideas of translation.
