Overview

A lot of people in India are still afraid to invest in the stock markets. Many who invest do not have the right knowledge to get into the markets in an informed manner. There are a lot of instruments we can invest in for our future. Today we have with us Sougata to tell us in depth about investments in general and how one can invest their personal money for a better future.

About Sougata Basu

  • He is the Founder of CashRich which is a venture-funded wealth management company.
  • He was with Tata Steel before founding CashRich and managed over two billion in assets.
  • He is very passionate about making people aware of the possibilities of investments and also the risks that come with them.

00:50- Tell me about your venture and your motivation behind starting it.

  • CashRich is an investment app where we help people get optimal returns while managing the risk involved with investing.
  • I made rookie mistakes at the start of my journey which is very common. So, this is very personal to me.
  • I got good exposure with Tata, but I saw that my family and friends were still making rookie mistakes. So, I decided to give expert tools to an average human to make better investments.

04:48- What are some of the pitfalls that small investors need to be aware of?

  • People extrapolate better historical returns and expect to get those kinds of returns in the future also.
  • People ignore the stocks or funds that have given lesser returns in history when maybe those options are better at that point in time.
  • What we do is risk management beforehand so that our users do not have to go through the lengthy research process and get good returns

12:14- What is your advice to the people who average out their losing investments?

  • So, the practice of averaging out the losers is generally considered foolish in the market. But it entirely depends on the business.
  • There are examples of businesses that went to half their price but then quadrupled in price.
  • What actually matters is how thorough your research is, what is your vision about the company, what is the company’s vision and how rationally sound your decision is.
