Overview

The sewage water generated by industry accompanied by scarce clean water paints the sorry state of water conditions across the world today. South Asian countries like Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, etc. are more prone to the risks that come with a lack of clean drinking water because of a lack of education and technologies compared to western countries. In today’s episode, we discuss a positive story of how an Indian business is using solar energy to convert raw sewage from certain industries into drinking water for the masses.

[00:32] – About Smita Singhal

  • Smita is the founder and director of Absolute Water Private Limited.
  • She has been awarded the best Green Entrepreneur by Entrepreneurship India.
  • Smita has also got the best technological innovation award.

[05:59] – What do you do at Absolute Water?

  • We basically treat sewage or certain strains of effluent coming from certain industries, for example, sugar.
  • We convert sewage into portable levels of water which are drinking water quantities without the use of chemicals and without the use of an RO.
  • It is done without any chemicals and is completely organic and nature based where we use a mix of organic and inorganic media like wood chips and gravel stones and sand.
  •  You can use that water for groundwater recharging, for any natural water body replenishment, and even for agriculture or irrigation.
  • We also got introduced to ozonation. It is nothing but cool three gas which is the same gas that is protecting our planet which creates a natural form of disinfection compared to using chlorine which most systems use.
  •  We also bring water to the level of drinking water with a specialized membrane.
  •  Specifically, in rural areas or in places where smooth treatment is absent where drinking water is not fit for use and the groundwater is also not fit for use, this is an excellent alternative to use where you can treat water in an actual way and give drinking water in its natural format.

[10:09] – Where are we in India when it comes to water recycling?

  •  We are a culturally and religiously led population.
  • They come up with arguments like you are making us drink water from the bathroom but if they were to look really properly the pipeline that’s coming to the home is common for everything.
  • The only thing where you’re purifying your water is through the RO of systems that you have everywhere.
  • The other thing is the form of education. You don’t need an RO system everywhere, you can actually just have a regular UV system.
