Networking, they say, is about planting relationships. Networks help you when you need a better position or a solution to your concern. Sometimes, even seen negatively, it becomes indispensable to understand the intention with which one networks. It doesn’t always have to be several contacts, but the quality they bring to your life personally or professionally.

Today’s guest, Salil Agrawal, is an Author, Mentor, and Coach. He also discusses how these networks help share mutual concerns ranging from the professional front to mental health. “It is easier to get lonely at the top, but such networking groups help in sharing and feeling a little less lonely.

00:46- What goes into arranging meetups?

  • We have been arranging these get-togethers since December 2008.
  • I identified 12  professionals and focused on people from business schools.
  • We have created means of communication. It used to be yahoo groups, and now it is WhatsApp.
  • We don’t have any registration or pay in advance. People just come to meet and talk, and we create the right environment for the event.

03:10- How important is networking in our lives, both professionally and personally?

  • Consulting cannot be sold through cold calls or knocking on doors.
  • Consulting business comes to you because people know you, respect you, and trust you. People are aware that you do something.
  • For anyone who is in a business where it’s significant to know people, networking is influential.
  • Networking is also influential because I think it fulfills a very strong social need.

 05:11- How are the younger people finding it beneficial to network with more senior people?

  • There are two sets of younger people. There’s a set of younger people who do not value this.
  • In the younger generation, the physical meetups have actually gone down.
  • There is huge value in meeting a diverse set of people.  I learn as much from people my age as from people 40 years younger than me.

08:02- How should one start to build a network?

  • I would recommend first getting on LinkedIn and making sure that you have a good LinkedIn profile, and that you’re starting to connect and engage with people on LinkedIn.
  • The barrier of walking up to someone and saying hi is something that needs to be overcome.
  • There are multiple organizations that are doing something similar. They try to organize these meetups

12:28- About the book

  • This book is actually dedicated to my father, who’s no more.
  • I’m not very good at elaborating. Recently, I came up with the idea of a crowdsourced book. It’s not just about my book it’s more about making sure that there is a book that is making sense for people.
  • We collected stories from 19 different people. I call them gems from the lives of interesting people rather than from the lives of ordinary people.
