Overview

Leadership is a vital skill that every employee needs to develop at some point in their career. Whether managing smaller teams or leading at the board level, leadership skills are essential. However, being an effective leader comes with its challenges and complexities. That’s where coaching plays a crucial role in guiding leaders on the right path. In this episode of “The Brand Called You,” we explore the essence of leadership, common challenges that arise, and strategies to overcome them.

[02:29] – How do you define leadership? How has your definition evolved over time?

  • People feel leadership is about managing a lot of people and is about being in control.
  • However, it is a misconception.
  • Leadership can have some management components.
  • There needs to be support, guidance and direction.
  • It also involves working as a team, understanding the thought processes of other people, and coming together for a desired outcome.

[05:59] – How do you see the role of leadership changing with the hybrid working model?

  • We’ve all experienced change.
  • Pandemic was a global thing and everyone learnt to work remotely.
  • But leadership is essentially the same, whether you’re in the room with people or whether you’re on screen with people.
  • A  good leader has great rapport with their team.
  • Building rapport when you are working remotely and you’re not engaged physically in the same space can be a challenge.
  • The expectations and the desired outcomes of projects are still the same; just the process is different.

[20:44] – Three lessons.

  • Be honest with yourself and others. Have real clarity about what you’re wanting and the reason for it.
  • Second is the communication as it is critical to every interaction we have. Understanding how to communicate effectively to achieve your desired outcome is essential for both personal and business discussions.
  • Seek help if you feel stuck or overwhelmed.
