  • General Kochhar recalls his cadet days and the physical challenges he faced.

[08:42] – When did you first become interested in China, and what made you write a book?

  • One day, I was in a camp and happened to strike up a conversation with the driver.
  • When asked his opinions on China, he said things like it is a powerful army and no one can compete with it. It is a very popular opinion in our country that China is invincible.
  • So, the idea brewed in my mind that I need to contribute to break the Chinese myth.

[11:50] – What are some myths you speak about in your book?

  • The first aspect is that if war happens, the armies are going to fight on mountainous terrain. If the fight had been in the plains, I understand that China has an edge over us. But fighting in mountains entails a large amount of human factor.
  • Technologically, the Chinese army is far ahead of the Indian army.
  • China started its military reforms in the early 2000s with the aim to build its army on modern technological warfare which would be related to cyber, space, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, blockchain, and robotics.
  • But we can never forget the man behind the mission. It is the Indian soldier standing tall at the border. Galwan is an example of human power.
  • At an altitude of 18,000 feet, you need to sustain yourself. The Kailash Heights Operation was a testimony of the physical fitness of the Indian soldiers. Chinese soldiers are not fit for the harsh terrains and weather.

[18:04] – Is China emerging as the bully of Asia?

  • China has three war strategies: psychological, legal, and perception or social media war.
  • From time to time, China comes up with impressive videos of its army exercises, showcasing the might of the Chinese military.
  • This is to show to the world that without fighting, you have intimidated your opponent.
  • This creates self-doubt in your opponent’s ability to fight a war with you.
  • China learned its lesson from the Vietnam War that it is better to win the war without firing a bullet.
