Overview

In the dynamic landscape of India’s economic trajectory, the juxtaposition of robust growth and sustainable development takes centre stage. As the nation surges ahead with rapid industrialization, there’s a growing need to reconcile this progress with environmental concerns, prompting a re-evaluation of regulatory frameworks. In this episode of The Brand Called You, Rahul Ahluwalia,  the Director of the Foundation for Economic Development takes us through the challenges and hurdles India still faces and shares interesting insight on how to tackle them.

[00:33] – About Rahul Ahluwalia

  • Rahul is the Director of the Foundation for Economic Development.
  • He was earlier an officer on special duty to the vice chairman of Niti Aayog.
  • He’s the author of a book titled, Makings of Miracles in Indian States.

08:27-  What in your view are some of the key sectors you believe will contribute to the growth of India?

  • For a country with a low per capita income, like India, growth has to come from exports before any sectors.
  • The consumer electronics sector, such as smartphones and mobile phones, is as massively important for exports.
  • India could tap into the potential of this sector, given the current trend of some businesses wanting to move out of China.
  • India could attract these businesses and capitalise on its comparative advantage in labour, creating numerous job opportunities, particularly in labour-intensive processes like mobile phone assembly.

18:33- Do you think our regulatory frameworks need to evolve a little more to be able to facilitate the sustained growth that you’re talking about?

  • We have to switch away from the mindset of a suspicious, weak country that is trying to keep itself closed.
  • We have to switch to the mindset of a confident country that can beat anyone in the world.
  • There needs to be a focus on India’s attractiveness for investments and encourage the country to work with the perspective that the maximum return can be achieved within India, promoting sustained growth and helping entrepreneurs compete globally.
