04:59- When you talk of Potters Bar Indians, you say that you go “beyond religion and politics”. Isn’t that a contradiction in itself when it comes to Indians?
- India is so diverse religiously.
- If I look at my own personal community, there’s a decline in youngsters going to temples.
- And I think there’s been too much focus on religion. Young kids can’t understand religion, they may find it boring.
- It’s really important for us to celebrate all festivities, regardless of religious background. And then they can make an informed decision.
- As soon as you start involving politics and religion in a community, it causes division.
- My aim is not to divide people. And the only way you can do that is by celebrating communities.
08:49- Who are Oshwals?
- The purpose of the group was to unite and connect the Oshwal Community globally.
- While Oshwals are often Jain and Hindu in origin, this group goes beyond any political or religious affiliations.
- Oshwals’ beginnings can be traced back as early as 457 BC in India. Since then the presence of Oshwals is now rooted worldwide.
- The earliest Oshwals recorded in the UK were in the 1950s.
- The group is intergenerational but has a particularly active younger audience seeking to connect with others from their community.
