  • Dr. Megha is a Research Associate at Free University of Berlin, and a visiting scholar at Sophia University, Tokyo, which is also her alma mater. 
  • She is an author of a book titled, “Indian migrants in Tokyo,” a study of sociocultural, religious and working worlds.
  • She has also been filming documentaries including “Daughters From Afghanistan.”
  • Dr. Megha has done a seven-minute documentary, “Indian Cooks in Japan and Finding their Niche”, “Unheard Stories of Migrant Women in 2022.” 

[08:18] – Tell me a little bit about your book. What encouraged or inspired you to pursue research in migration?

  • During my masters in gender, I studied the lives of Indian women after marriage.
  • In my Ph.D. days, my mentor would share about the Philippine migrants. I could relate as I too was a migrant.
  • I realized about the things that could be done for Indian migrants in Japan.
  • I wanted people to know about the Indian migrants in Japan and hence, I started writing for the print media, “The Japan Times.”

  • The concept of migration opens up a new horizon for you. 
  • The experiences when you come across the cultural shock benefits to shape your own personality.
  • Besides the economic opportunities, the real opportunities lie in knowing your  country better, and knowing yourself better. 
  • Linguistic and food challenges are quite common, but these challenges have the power to shape you in a beautiful way.
