Overview

The definition of brand building is to generate awareness about your business using strategies and campaigns with the goal of creating a unique and lasting image in the marketplace. Positive image + standing out = brand success.

With social media gaining a larger part of our lives, businesses have resorted to them for marketing their brands. A business branch, which was earlier seldom seen to be a cost, is now an investment, trying to gain maximum eyeballs and attraction to a brand for its success.

But with the advent of technology in every field, the crux of a process remains the same. What is marketing? Why is it important? How to approach it? We have all your questions answered in our conversation with a leading marketing specialist, Hillel Fuld.

00:40- About Hillel Fuld

  • Hillel Fuld, named Israel’s top marketer and “The man transforming Startup Nation to Scale-up Nation” by Forbes, is a tech journalist, startup marketer, and technology, expert.
  • Hillel works with technology companies and accompanies them from idea to revenue. He also works with many leading tech brands as an influencer. These include Google, Oracle, Huawei, and many more.
  • Hillel is a global speaker, he’s a tech columnist, and he’s a startup marketing advisor.

01:10- What are some of your key pointers in moving from idea to revenue?

  • Entrepreneurs need to get used to the fact that there are failures along the way.
  • When people talk about the hockey stick effect where a startup or a company just grows up like a hockey stick or when people use the word viral or any other such terms it’s just going to be an easy ride, they’re in for a surprise.
  • Just the ability to be resilient and to get up when we fall and brush ourselves off, that’s important.
  • Another thing that unfortunately many entrepreneurs kind of neglect is the market research element.

02:40- Successful startups

  • All the winning tech companies out there, whether you look at Facebook, you look at Twitter, you look at Uber, or Airbnb, it wasn’t the idea that helped them win.
  • All they had were two components that cannot be replicated: Execution and People.
  • People with grit, people with resilience, people with vision. Every company should have a visionary and a person who executes that vision.

04:10- How significant are these startup teams’ competencies as compared to scale-up teams’ competencies?

  • Skills and experience can be acquired, but talent cannot be acquired.

05:41- What are the other areas that a startup entrepreneur needs to be mindful of when she or he starts to scale up?

  • A very common misconception is that companies or entrepreneurs say they want to raise as much money as possible at the highest valuation possible, and that is a fundamental mistake.
  • It’s about where that capital is coming from. Is this smart money, is this dumb money, is this an investor that wants to take a very active role.

06:56- Is marketing a science or an art?

  • I think it’s somewhere in the middle.
  • There are things in marketing that must be quantified and that makes it a science, and there are things in marketing that must not ever be quantified and that makes it an art.
