  • She is an accomplished and well recognised poet.
  • Her work has been published widely all over the world.

[04:43] – When you say that to be a poet is to burn your house down, are you stating that you can’t do anything else?

  • Not at all, though you have to find a day job to support your habit of poetry.
  • I discovered that I love teaching.
  • Teaching and writing have always sort of competed with one another.
  • But I did not like traditional teaching.
  • When I went to NYU, I was privileged to create my own program.

[14:35] – What would you say to someone who is hesitant to dive into poetry?

  • Forget about trying to interpret it.
  • You need to find a way in some bit of language that you experience and trust that.
  • When I was about 15, my mother read TS Eliot’s “The Wasteland.”
  • I did not understand one word, but I felt it in my body.
  • You could make that physical and emotional link, and not worry about what it would be.
  • You can figure out the meaning later, and also never be just one thing.
  • You can’t do it wrong.
  • All you could do is experience it.

[23:12] – Three lessons for aspiring poets.

  • Don’t be afraid.
  • Don’t try to be alone.
  • Love the language.
