Profile

Swostik enjoys building products. While at school (Kendriya Vidyalaya), he eagerly waited every year to participate in the Social Science Exhibition and Science Exhibition, where he built prototypes and small-scale models of engineering concepts. Coming to IIT Madras, further fueled this interest, and provided the exposure and infrastructure. During his five years at IIT Madras, Swostik spent the bulk of his time at the Centre For Innovation (CFI), designing and building products. In his fifth year, he said “Time just flew. I wish I had more time to stay at CFI and IIT Madras”. He fondly remembers the days when he was involved in Aero-Club, Contraptions, Robotics, Junkyard Wars, Project X, etc. Swostik loved his branch – Mechanical Engineering. For his final year thesis project at IIT Madras in 2012-2013, he wanted to work in an area of hardware product development that could contribute positively to society. He joined Dr Sujatha Srinivasan at the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) of IIT Madras, where they designed and developed a Swimming Pool Lift for the physically challenged.

Swostik was introduced to the field of assistive devices by this project and he developed an interest in this area. After graduating from IIT Madras in 2013, he joined ITC. After a two-year stint there, he returned to IIT Madras to pursue his keen interest in product design and to work in an area that he found meaningful. He joined the Standing Wheelchair Project at the TTK Center for R2D2, IIT Madras as one of the designers. For testing the product, the team travelled across 40 locations in India and interacted with 200 plus wheelchair users during 2015. During these user interactions, they observed first-hand, the mediocrity of products presently being used for (a) indoor and (b) outdoor mobility by wheelchair users. The company NeoMotion was formed in May 2016 to pursue the mission to enable every wheelchair user to live life to the fullest. Swostik is the Co-Founder and CEO of NeoMotion.
