15:05: How can leaders effectively rebuild trust?
- We rebuild trust by understanding the harm caused when we fail.
- I need to deconstruct the things that may be going on for you.
- Need to invite you into the conversation.
- Start by asking questions and try to apologize for the harm that was done.
- Able to explain why this happened.
- And how I am going to take steps to try to address that.
17:32- About the model you have built.
- The model begins with the bases of trust. When deciding whether to trust or not, people ask two questions: How likely am I to be harmed (perceived uncertainty) and if I am harmed, how badly will it hurt (perceived vulnerability)?
- We can increase our trustworthiness—our perceived uncertainty—by addressing three factors: Do you have my best interests at heart? (Benevolence), Do you follow through on commitments? (Integrity), and can you do the job? (Ability).
- When it comes to vulnerability, scarcity (what do I have to lose?), the stakes (what do I feel is at stake?), and value (what value do I place on the stakes?).
21:00- About your book, Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World.
- Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, outlines ground-breaking Trust Unlimited blueprint for building trust.
- It moves away from the traditional approach of influencing people’s willingness to trust—the con artist’s tactic—to employing one or more of ten levers, which leaders can “pull” to close the gap between how much they are trusted and how much they should be.
- This approach also makes them more trustable and increases trust where it is deficient. Detailed case studies provide examples of his Trust Unlimited model in action.
24:40: Lessons from the conversation.
- Understand the other person because most of us tend to believe that we are right and other people may not be right.
- It is so critical for a leader to be intentional and train yourself to be able to build trust.
- Start with the positive about everyone else.
