Overview

In this episode of The Brand Called You, Ankit Alok Bagaria talks about insect biotechnology and using insects as a sustainable protein source. He discusses how insects can efficiently convert organic waste into nutritious ingredients. Ankit covers the processes of cultivating insects at scale, the benefits of using silkworms and black soldier fly larvae, and the potential of insect-based products to transform industries like cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. 00:34- About Ankit Alok Bagaria

  • Ankit Bagaria is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Loopworm which is an Insect Biotechnology Co.
  • He started the company immediately after graduating from IIT-Roorkee, where he studied chemical engineering.
  • Ankit along with his team is addressing the pressing need for sustainable, nutritious feed ingredients for pets, aquaculture, and poultry.

03:59-  What makes insects a superior source of proteins and fats compared to traditional sources?

  • Insects can consume organic waste and convert it into highly digestible protein stored in their bodies with an excellent amino acid profile.
  • What makes protein superior is its amino acid profile and digestibility, which determines its nutritional value.
  • With 80-90% digestibility and a good amino acid profile, insect protein is extremely nutritious but remains underutilised.

14:50- Are there any regulatory norms or challenges that you face when it comes to insect biotechnology?

  • There are established rules for bioengineering and genetically modifying insects, but no clear regulations regarding mass insect cultivation yet.
  • The government supports insect farming startups with grants since it solves waste management and feed ingredient issues, but lacks formal policies to regulate the space.
  • Attracting investment is difficult without formalized policies so collaborating with the government to promote insect farming appropriately would be beneficial.
