[00:37] – About Sateesh Seetharamiah

  • Sateesh is the CEO of Edge Platforms and Board Member of EdgeVerve.
  • He is a pioneer on the Internet of Things (IoT). He is also one of the founding members of the MIT AutoID Lab.

[11:46] – Please talk about the importance and the impact of Automation and data analytics. Where are we today in all of this, and can you give some examples?

  • We still have some ways to go. I took another pivot from the old IoT thinking and started looking at enterprises on what kind of problems they have.
  • IoT was about connecting everything to everything in a much larger ecosystem. When we founded Edge, we saw that there was a tremendous opportunity to solve certain issues that companies face.
  • ERP, while having its own wave of value creation, came with its own set of baggage. While it solved standard operating procedures and brought best practices from industries, it also created a huge amount of silos.
  • The ERP systems are going to be there for quite some time to come but the world still needs a different way in which they can interact with enterprises.
  • They require a very different layer of technology to integrate with their value trained partners etc.

[18:58] – What are your thoughts on foundation models and what impact is AI going to have on automation and digital transformation?

  • As a company, we’ve always believed in the potential of AI as a catalyst to bring good to society.
  • EdgeVerve is one of the first companies to invest in open AI in 2015.
  • It was a non-profit trust, and we invested a certain amount of money to drive this innovation, to help engage in this innovation and then Amazon probably came a little later into that mix.
  • In 2019, we put out a paper that I authored; it’s called “Automation Singularity.”
  • In that paper, I spoke about automation and how it can drive all the way from basic automation to automating augmented human thinking.
  • I was pretty convinced that this was going to happen. I wasn’t really sure when.
  • Despite all its benefits, I was also concerned about how it could be exploited for all the wrong reasons.
