Overview

Comedy, for ages, has been a stress buster. It enables us to laugh, helping us release our tensions. The best part of comedy is how relatable it is to our lives, making us unable to resist laughter. In today’s episode, we discussed with a famous comedian what goes into good comedy.

[00:36] – About Anthony Ackroyd

  • Anthony is the Chief Enjoyment Officer of the Laughter Advantage.
  • He is an Australian comedian, actor, writer and motivational speaker known for his impersonations of political figures.
  • Anthony became a household name as the star of ABC TV’s legendary comedy series “The Big Gig.” He has performed and written for hundreds of Australian and international television shows, radio programs and feature films.
  • He is also a writer and performer of three of Australia’s most successful comedy TV series: “Hey Hey! It’s Saturday, The Comedy Company and Good News Week.”

[01:35] – How did you first become interested in comedy and impersonations?

  • I once dreamt of being a rock star, but it didn’t pan out. So, I moved to Sydney with hopes of pursuing music or acting.
  • Initially chasing fame and fortune, reality hit after a couple of months, and I found myself in the same struggle for food and shelter as many aspiring performers.
  • That’s when I heard about “The Comedy Store.” It had just opened in Sydney, and I believed I had a knack for comedy.
  • Desperation drove me to attend a tryout night, now known as an Open Mic night, and I observed the comedy scene.
  • I started developing my own act and began performing at The Comedy Store.
  • It was a rollercoaster journey with plenty of ups and downs, but gradually, I found success.

[07:57] – What would you say is your own unique style that you have been able to connect so easily with audiences?

  • My goal was to tap into the audience’s thoughts and deliver them in a surprising way that evoked an “Oh yeah, that’s right!” response.
  • People relate to everyday situations that they can easily put themselves into.
  • Off-stage, I’m introverted, but when I step on stage, I become quite outrageous. Taking those risks is essential.
  • There are times when I fail miserably, but when I do succeed, it’s an indescribable feeling unlike anything else in my life.
