Irakli Beridze, the Head of Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at UNICRI, United Nations is here to share his vast knowledge of transformative technologies that are changing the world right now. He helped set up the centre for artificial intelligence and robotics in the UN and his mission is to use AI for the benefit of humankind. In 2000, Irakli joined the International Organizations and worked for the prohibition of chemical weapons that earned OPCW(Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) the recognition of awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 2013.Â
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Irakli broadly defines the term Artificial Intelligence. There are three main ingredients to AI> a large amount of data, computational power, algorithms that will decipher the data and make sense of this data.Â
“In the year 2025 we will have 175 zetabytes of data and 175 zetabytes of data is as much as stacking dvds all the way from here to the moon 27 times so that’s a lot of data.” No human is capable of interpreting that much amount of data and that’s where the AI comes in to interpret and make sense of this data.Â
About the Benefits of AI
Did you know that Artificial Intelligence helped in spotting the Covid-19 when it first emerged? AI is getting bigger exponentially but it is yet to reach its full potential. AI is helping the human race across multiple disciplines, from healthcare, crime prevention, energy sector, education, and so on to the extent that “we may not be the most intelligent beings anymore” but Irakli ensures us that it is in far distance that it could happen. Hence it becomes utmost important that we have safety nests while using this technology.
Artificial intelligence and Policing
AI is now being used in crime prevention but could it be possible that things could go the undesired way and criminals take advantage of this technology if gotten the necessary data? Yes, it is very likely that it can happen! Irakli shares three possible ways in which AI can be misused by the criminals-
*AI is a powerful technology that learns from its own mistakes and gets stronger each day. Someone who is willing to and has the necessary knowledge can easily find a loophole in this technology and penetrate into the government sector or private sector. There’s also a chance of misuse of AI in the political sector. Later in the episode he talks of measures of curbing this.Â
AI may be the present and future of the developed world but there is a huge divide between the availability of AI in the developed and developing countries, with more than 4 Billion people who do not even have the basic digital capability. Irakli shows us the ways in which AI can reach the other half of the world. Tune in to watch the full episode and learn some never known facts about Artificial Intelligence!
