[10:50] – What sparked your interest in sustainable settlement in extreme environments?

  • My interest in sustainable settlement in extreme environments grew out of a combination of factors.
  • It included my fascination with space exploration and my realisation of the interconnectedness between off-world settlements and sustainability efforts on Earth. 
  • I chose Venus as a potential location for human settlement due to its unique characteristics, such as the possibility of experiencing one g of gravity in the upper atmosphere and its relatively hospitable temperature conditions.

[27:34] – How do you think leaders with different leadership styles can be encouraged to prioritise social and environmental responsibility in their decision-making processes?

  • Leaders with different styles can be encouraged to prioritise social and environmental responsibility by highlighting the strategic benefits of sustainability.
  • This includes things like risk mitigation, brand reputation, talent attraction, and long-term profitability.
  • Key considerations for leaders include understanding the interconnectedness between business operations and social/environmental impact.
  • They need to align business goals with sustainable practices, engage stakeholders in decision-making processes, and foster a culture of accountability and transparency.
  • Adaptability and empathy are key traits of effective leaders, as they enable leaders to tailor their approach to the needs and preferences of individual team members.
  • Empathy is essential in effective leadership as it fosters understanding, trust, and collaboration within teams.
