Overview

We often hear news of data leaks and the importance of privacy for data used by companies. A layman might easily get confused, to understand the reasons a company would use data for. This leads to the concept of data science, where a company uses data to make informed business decisions. While it has positive implications on business, it comes with its challenges of ethics and privacy. In today’s episode, Jason Schwartzman, a leading data scientist, shares insights about the fundamentals of data science and business intelligence, the impact of new developments in AI and machine learning, and the importance of ethical considerations and privacy in handling sensitive data.

  • Business intelligence is the notion of understanding of business through the eyes of your data.
  • Data science corresponds to three areas that people use: descriptive, predictive and prescriptive.

[06:22] – What is the most challenging part of turning raw data into meaningful business insights?

  • The first is to have data owners understand and be confident in their own data.
  • I have found it challenging to get people to be comfortable owning their own data.
  • The second is to have that visualized. I tend to use a Data Looker, which was formerly called Data Studio as a way of helping people.
  • This simple and free tool helps companies understand their data.
  • The third is to bring in classifications, recommendations, analytics, explain how AI made the choice.

[10:43] – How do you handle the matter of ethical considerations?

  • We are in the times of seeing the transfer of an explosion of personal data online.
  • First is to consider the (PII) Personally Identifiable Information, which is incredibly important to respect and protect both legally and morally.
  • The second is called the IPR SPECT.
  • Data is the blood of many companies. As data scientists, we need to learn how to protect and control their own data and acknowledge it is theirs.
  • When Chat GPT first came out, there was an explosion of people using it until they realized that open AI is going to own everything that is typed in. Within a month, open AI offered the opportunity to delete your own data.
