Overview

The literacy of any country decides a lot about the future they might have. It affects the standard of life of the people, their happiness index, future innovations, etc. A lot of people in Brazil can’t even read a paragraph-long text or do basic mathematics. If they don’t have basic hard skills they can’t be expected to contribute to the growth of the country from a professional point of view or take good care of their families for that matter. And this problem is not only in Brazil but in many parts of the world. Today we have with us Paulo tell us about how he is helping solve the literacy problem.

01:15- What is Alicerce and what is your ambition behind it?

  • It is a disruptive education-centered business model. Its story is connected to the story of my life.
  • We saw a lot of adults who didn’t have basic mathematical or reading skills which made us realize that it can become a very big issue.
  • I looked into the education issue in Brazil in 2017 and realized it was huge and that is what I wanted to work on.

18:27- What do you do and how is your work viewed by those around you?

  • When we started we looked at the countries that are best at education. We analyzed what China is doing.
  • What they are doing is that they provide after-school tutoring programs that help students level up and improve where they lack the skills.
  • We realized that this can be scaled if it’s a for-profit business, so we started to form a business model around it

28:38- Would you say the skills you teach are classic or more modern?

  • We are what we call PISA tracking. We try to work with the skills of PISA which are reading, writing, math, science, and some form of social-emotional learning.
  • We go beyond that by doing a full social-emotional learning program integrated with our knowledge training program.
  • We work on three pillars which are – hard skills including reading, writing, etc., social-emotional learning, and then what we call discovery by expanding the minds of students.
