Overview
Cancer is becoming an increasingly common health issue in India. According to a recent report, it is estimated that there will be 80,000 new cancer cases every year in India. While it is deemed to be incurable, cancer that is detected at early stages can be cured depending on the resources and other factors of accessibility available with the patient.
India has a number of Cancer prevention and awareness organisations. These organisations work diligently towards helping cancer patients and spreading more awareness regarding the disease.
Today, on The Brand Called You, we are delighted to welcome a woman who is working relentlessly towards helping cancer patients across India. We welcome Ruby Ahluwalia on the podcast.
About Ruby:
Ruby is the Founder of Sanjeevni, an NGO which handles Life Beyond Cancer. She is a bureaucrat from the Civil Services 1987 batch. Ruby was conferred with the award/title of Pride of Uttarakhand and has been awarded several times. Ruby is also an author of a book titled- ‘Fragrance of a Wild Soul.’
In this conversation with our host Ashutosh Garg, Ruby shares her story of fighting cancer and now helping others to do so.
Why establish Sanjeevani?
A cancer survivor herself, Ruby knew the impact cancer diagnosis had on a person. She wanted to help underprivileged patients gain access to the right treatments and nutrition.
“When I would go to TATA hospital, I would always think that I am going through this experience with all the resources I have. And that there are so many people in the same hospital going through the same experience or maybe worse without any of the resources that I had. This is what kind of remained in my mind. Or you can say that this was what haunted me. So when I was declared cancer-free in 2012, I just went and registered Sanjeevani Life Beyond Cancer to work with underprivileged cancer patients”
Today, Ruby not only helps underprivileged cancer patients but is also making society aware of the dangers of cancer.
Discussion:
Ruby goes on to explain the programs available at the organization. She shares that apart from helping patients get access to treatment and nutrition, Sanjeevani had many more targets. They are focused on spreading cancer awareness among the citizens. She also talks about the nutrition programs and celebrations that take place at Sanjeevani.
Further into the discussion, Ashutosh and Ruby talk about the increasing number of cancer patients in India. Ruby believes that external, hereditary, as well as internal factors, play a very major role in the spread of the disease. She strongly asserts that negative emotions do impact our bodies internally.
Her book:
Ruby talks about her book ‘Fragrance of a Wild Soul.’ Six years after being declared cancer-free, Ruby started penning down her experiences as a cancer survivor. Her motivation was to assemble her experiences and inform people of not only becoming cancer-free but also remaining cancer-free. She also wanted to address how self negligence impacts our physical health. Ruby’s book is now available on eCommerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.
She strongly believes in seizing opportunities and making things right!
