Mr. Shoummo K Acharya, Founder, Chairman, and Managing Director of eTrans Solutions Pvt Ltd. is one of the most active leaders in the field of telematics and logistics. A chemical engineer from Jadavpur University and alumnus of Templeton College, Oxford, Shoummo has a formidable reserve of experience in petroleum products, advertising, public relations, transportation, freight forwarding, concept creation & promotion, and information technology. He started his career with Indo-Burma Petroleum in sales, worked in close collaboration with Govt and petroleum industry to initiate a number of measures for the petroleum industry. Shoummo then moved to head public relations and advertising in IBP-Balmer Group. In 1985 Shoummo took over the freight forwarding division and was responsible for initiating the turn-around of logistic activity of Balmer Lawrie before he moved to the United Kingdom to set up Balmer Lawrie’s UK division. In 1994 he came back to the country as the Managing Director of Indian Container Leasing Co. Ltd (re-christened Transafe Services Ltd).
Shoummo converted his dream into reality by creating eTrans Solutions Pvt Ltd in 2000 and has been successful in changing the way logistics is handled in Indian Industry. It has been servicing blue-chip companies like Tata Steel, Tata Tubes, Linde, AirLiquide, CESC, Tata Bluescope, JSL, Spencers, Hindalco, Tata Power, Tata Metaliks, Himadri Chemicals & Industries Ltd, etc and a large number of transporters as its dedicated customers. The system envisages the creation of a shared infrastructure to provide information on truck movement, both in-bound & out-bound, including in-plant delays for loading/unloading and invoicing, and introduction of performance enhancement and monitoring tools to improve transport efficiency by use of GPS based Vehicle Trackers and Network Video recorder integrated GPS device. The company proposes to create a freight exchange to help disintermediate the freight transport industry.
With rich experience in transportation infrastructure and logistics, Shoummo, past President of the Kolkata chapter, past President of the Kolkata Roundtable of CSCMP, has addressed several industry sessions on the subject. He was also a member of the Working Group of the Planning Commission of India, to consider issues relating to logistics in the 11th Plan, and Chairman of the subgroup on Industry Structure Issues.
