Overview

Efficient leadership forms the backbone of any successful organization. Clear communication, constructive feedbacks to the team, and accepting one’s flaws are the key trademarks of a good leader. In today’s episode, we discuss how leadership has evolved over the years and what makes a good leader.

[00:35] – About Dr. Debra Clary

  • Dr. Debra is an independent director.
  • She was earlier in executive leadership positions with Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Brown Forman, and Humana.
  • Debra is also an author and an international speaker.
  • She is an award-winning film producer too.

[02:03] – Tell more about, when you say, “you improved the impact and contribution.”

  • I work for Humana, which is a very large health company in the US.
  • I am embedded in the c-suite, and so my role is to help the senior team with their impact and contribution to the organization.
  • The ways in which I do that is from individual coaching in terms of how they’re showing up and how they can improve at the individual level.
  • It’s about, how the team gets to decisions faster, and how the decent team debates more. It is my role to help facilitate those conversations and ensure that all voices are heard.
  • We are challenging one another but most importantly when they leave the room is that they’re clear on the decision that they’ve made, and they are one team.
  • We have over a hundred thousand employees and thus, it is important to be clear and precise in terms of what the organization needs to go do because our mission is to improve the health of those we serve.

[07:35] – What are the key trends that you have noticed as leadership has evolved?

  • If you go back as far as the 40s and the 50s, you know the people that were leading corporations and government were all men.
  • The University of Michigan did a study in the 50s that said, “What makes a great leader?”, and it was something absurd like you are a man, and you are tall, and you have hair. It was a list of physical attributes.
  • It was about coming out of World War II and was about command and control.
  •  The leaders were at the top and they were giving all the directions.
  • It doesn’t work that way today. There is a profound shift in a very positive way around inclusive leadership, and in my experience of 30 years working in these big corporations, for me, the best leaders are those that care about the work that they’re doing, they care about their employees and customers.
  • A key part of inclusive leadership in building relationships is curiosity, and curiosity means that I am truly interested in learning about your life experience.
  • My job as a leader is to set up an environment where you can thrive based on what I know about you.
