Networking, they say, is about planting relationships. Networks help you when you need a better position or a solution to your problem. Sometimes, even seen negatively, it becomes important to understand the intention with which one networks. It doesn’t always have to be several contacts, but the quality they bring to your life personally or professionally.
Today’s guest, Maria L Gallo, who is an Alumni Trailblazer, Alumni Researcher and an author. She also discusses how these networks help share mutual concerns ranging from the professional front to mental health. “It is easier to get lonely at the top, but such networking groups help in sharing and feeling a little less lonely.

[01:03] How many Alumni Trailblazers are there?
- I am probably the only one that can call myself an Alumni Trailblazer.
- I make it my mission to have people think differently about their Alumni potential.
- I want people to think about their alumni networks differently.
03:23- What sets the alumni network apart from the rest?
- Any shared or formal experience that people had in their life can be an alumnus of that experience.
[04:21] What is the definition of Alumni you use when you describe a network?
- The pure definition of Alumni is a former student of a college or university.
- Sometimes you can call it an alumnus which is a male or alumni for a female, but alum is a nice common gender-neutral term.
- An alum is somebody that had any shared experience, whether that is a former company that they worked in.

- The network is really a two-way street.
- You need to be asking is there anything I can help you with.
- Always ask who else you think I should meet so that you can start building that network further.

- I wrote the book primarily for recent graduates.
- It is for people who are at that crossroads in their life.

Dr. Maria Gallo is a researcher and practitioner who established KITE, a social enterprise to support philanthropy research and alumni education —Keep in Touch Education.
Maria has almost 20 years of experience in academic, management and alumni professional roles in higher education. She was recently appointed as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Trinity Business School – Trinity College, Dublin and is also a Research Fellow with the Community Knowledge Initiative at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
