Overview

The Exodus Story has a lot of interpretations. Different people believe in their own different versions of the story. The widely believed perspective is that it is the story of a voluntary struggle with adversity in order to become stronger and free from slavery. Today we have Zev and Laura with us to share their personal perspective of the story.

About Zev Shanken

  • He studied biblical texts at Northwestern University and Hebrew University before becoming a literature teacher.
  • He is very passionate about literature and has published two books of poetry.
  • He is a teacher at the New York Department of Education.

05:55- What is your take on the Exodus story?

  • The first question is whether the story really happened or not but to me the fact that whether it happened or not is irrelevant.
  • What matters is the idea that it represents. It represents the idea that the slaves can free themselves.
  • Moses stuck up for the weak even after being very wealthy because he understood his responsibility towards the weak which is a symbol of heroism.

20:18- Why do you think they had to spend 40 years in the desert after being liberated?

  • The tradition says that it was easy to get the Israelites out of slavery, but it was very difficult to get the slavery out of the Israelites.
  • It is very hard to change the conditioning of the mind, especially when it has been conditioned for a very long time.
  • In the story, the two spies that stood strong in the face of adversity were given the position of the next leaders. That I think is the teaching of the story, to stay strong and brave in front of whatever challenges life throws at us.
