00:31 – About Mildred Yuan

  • Mildred Yuan is a talent agent, diversity advisor and coach.
  • She has worked for the top FTSE 150 brands.
  • She’s a competitive professional ballroom dancer and has represented the UK in Seven World and European Championships.

05:05- How has your experience as an Asian American woman in the industry, shaped your approach to diversity and inclusion?

  • Growing up as part of the “model minority” in the 1990s, I was encouraged to fit in, work hard, and avoid rocking the boat. This approach initially served me well in my career.
  • However, the events of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement made me realise that I could no longer wait for others to solve diversity issues. I felt compelled to step forward and become an advocate, even though it felt scary at first.
  • My perspective shifted from staying hidden to actively discussing not just representation, but also how minority groups navigate and operate within the industry and the wider world.

17:48- What are your thoughts on the intersection of art and activism, especially in the context of diversity and inclusion?

  • The convergence of art and activism creates impactful narratives that resonate with audiences, driving social change beyond mere awareness.
  • Instances like the ITV series “Mr. Bates versus the Post Office” demonstrate how art can catalyse tangible action and governmental response to long-standing societal issues.
  • While some activist art may provoke discomfort, it fosters critical reflection and dialogue, ultimately fostering deeper understanding and progress towards diversity and inclusion goals.
