Gardening always has been my hobby since childhood which got translated into passion over years of pursuing it in different climate zones of our Country. After leaving my ISRO job, gardening became my full time hobby and solace in the synthetic urban life of NCR. After facing many challenges in sustainable gardening practices in NCR life, I started deep diving into different techniques and aspects of sustainable urban gardening. Through my journey of understanding the challenges of NCR weather, soil and water, I focused my studies on soil building. This journey eventually lead me to creation of “ Amrit Mitti” on my roof top. A staunch believer in ecological ways of life, this study helped me build my own Urban Roof top farm. My this little farm is now sustainable employing “ Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” principles. I reduced my bio degradable house waste from going to landfills, Reuse my own resources of grey water and recycle the post harvest bio degradable waste! I am gradually building my own seed bank of open pollinated seed varieties of vegetables for urban farmers like me. The waste management at home became an integral activity of my soil building and Urban Roof top farming.
